It works now…that means it’ll always work right?
Well actually no. Often when given a brief a designer will be expected to analyse competitor’s sites and produce something which looks and often functions in a similar way to that which already exists. This creates a definite style for a certain sector which you as a designer are expected to conform to by your clients. The question I pose is ‘Why do we have to conform to the style of the sector?’

The Design Process…

Okay so here is a little insight into the design process…
Firstly you should produce a wireframe for the initial design which essentially lays out the skeleton of the site before any style has been applied. This is best practice as many clients often can’t see beyond the visual and will almost leave the information architecture as an afterthought. (more…)

Offline inspiration for Web Designers…

So you’ve been handed a new design brief and your first port of call are the CSS Galleries. The temptation for many web designers is to open Photoshop, whack in your content and take it from there. This is approach however is flawed and is often taken because the designer is either lazy or thinks he is saving time by skipping the ‘brainstorming away from screen’ step.

Of course nearly all businesses these days have a web site, but does it do anything?
In the early days, companies decided to have a web site because they felt they needed one and they filled it with as much information as possible. Truth is most people won’t bother to read it all.

6. Check Spelling.
Again this may seem like an obvious point but it is vital you get a second pair of eyes to read over copy and check it reads well and is spelt correctly. Spelling mistakes give bad first impressions of a company so simply take care check, recheck and recheck again.
