Designers & Developers: are they that different?

When we design a new site for you at ihm we have two key individuals who help create your website: namely the Designer and the Developer. The Designer creates the visual look of your site, whilst the developer will transform this visual into a website by incorporating various codes and functionalities.

Designers can’t code?

Within our industry it is believed by many that designers can’t code whilst developers can’t design. Here at IHM it is clear that this is not the case and it is important for a designer to at least have an understanding of the possibilities other technologies offer.  Once a designer begins to understand these technologies like jquery he can factor these into his designs making the whole process smoother. The developer should also feed off the expertise of the designer and gain a good grounding in design principles, allowing him to complete smaller scale design projects without always having to rely on the Designer.

The conception of a website primarily involves two stages:

  • The Front end: this comprises of page design / slicing up images for build. It can also incorporate Initial build of the site using XHTML and CSS.
  • The Back end is the domain of the Developer and can also include the initial build of the site in XHTML / CSS. The Back end also typically features other coding languages like PHP, Jquery and ASP which give the website increased functionality. The role of the Developer typically consists of validating contact forms / pages, setting up databases and a whole host of other tasks.

Designers / Developers: Working in harmony

Traditionally these two roles were very much fixed, but now the divide is becoming less and it is becoming harder to distinguish the individual as ‘just a designer’ or ‘just a developer’. However although there is now less of a gap between the two types people will always have one particular area of expertise. Effectively a good website can’t exist without both designer and developer working in harmony. Look at it this way: a designer produces the initial wow factor which pleases the client and brings the crowds into a site and the developer then turns this into tangible results: i.e. Good functionality, seo, accessibility.
